Essential Eight Is Being Retired — What Australian Small Businesses Should Do Next

SMB1001 cyber security certification shield for Australian small businesses

The Australian Signals Directorate — Australia’s federal cyber security agency — has announced the Essential Eight framework will be retired within two years, replaced by a new “Essentials” series. If you’re a small business owner wondering what this means for you, here’s the short version: it’s time to move to SMB1001.

Pearce IT has long used the Essential Eight to help Melbourne businesses improve their cyber security. But it was never easy to apply in practice — designed for enterprise, not the small and medium businesses that make up the backbone of the Australian economy.

Over the last 12 months, we’ve been transitioning from E8 to SMB1001. This announcement confirms that was the right call.

How SMB1001 Improves Cyber Security for Small Business

Built from the ground up for businesses with fewer than 200 staff, SMB1001 is a practical, tiered cyber security certification standard that actually fits the way small businesses operate. It covers what matters:

  • Protection — technology foundations, access controls, and endpoint security tailored to your environment
  • Resilience — tested backup and recovery so your business can bounce back fast
  • People — staff training and policies, because most breaches start with a human, not a technical failure

Certification runs Bronze through to Diamond — most small businesses target Bronze to Gold as a strong, credible starting point. It’s updated annually, cyber insurers are recognising it, larger organisations are asking their suppliers about it, and the Queensland Law Society has formally endorsed it.
